A COVID-19 Update

Psalm 91

1 Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High
will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say of the Lord, "He is my refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust."

Dear Ministry Partners,

I returned home from Burundi last Thursday.  After 28 hours of crowded African airports and airplanes, the emptiness of Dulles International in Washington D.C. was an eye-opening confirmation of all that I had seen unfold in America over the previous two weeks.  While in Burundi, I followed the news of the COVID-19 virus, and became familiar with the terms ‘social distancing,’ ‘flattening the curve,’ and ‘self-quarantine.’ Today, I am in prayer with each of you, believing that God will lead us through this very challenging time.

Since returning home, our staff and widows in Burundi have been on my mind constantly.  As of this message, there are no reported cases of COVID-19 in Burundi, but truthfully, we cannot know for sure as testing kits are not available for most Burundians.  The countries bordering Burundi- Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, and Tanzania all have reported cases.

Today, I want to share with you the initial steps Sister Connection will be taking to assist our widows and orphans in preparation against the virus.  This week, as we begin the process of distributing sponsorship funds, we will also use this opportunity to educate the widows about the virus and how to best protect themselves from becoming infected.  In a country with very few medical resources, prevention is paramount. Essentially, we will communicate the following:

1.  HANDS- Wash them often with soap and water

2.  ELBOW- Cough into it

3.  FACE- Don’t touch it

4.  SPACE- Keep a safe distance [3-6 feet]

5.  HOME- Stay home if you can

To further assist them, we will begin distributing hand soap to the widows.  Our National Director, Joy, informs me that the cost to purchase a bottle of liquid soap is about 3000 Burundian Francs [$1.39]  While we have allocated enough funds from our Critical Needs account to purchase a few hundred bottles of hand soap, I would like to invite each of you to help us purchase more, as there are more than 2000 widows and orphans in the Sister Connection family.

If you feel led to help, please send your gift to Sister Connection and direct the funds to be applied to our Critical Needs Fund- Hand Soap. Or click here.

Moving forward, I will provide you with updates every Friday over the next several weeks.  If we should raise more money than needed for purchasing hand soap, I want to assure you that any remaining funds will be used wisely to assist widows and orphans with other critical needs as they arise.

In closing, and most importantly, please join me in daily prayer for the Burundian staff, widows, and orphans.

Because Jesus said they matter.

Blessings, Craig
